Updated Kindle Android App Supports KF8 Files (Which Means More Pretty Pictures)

Amazon's Kindle team seems have had their hands full these past few days -- a Retina Display-friendly update was just pushed to the iOS App Store last week, and now the Android version is getting a nice little bump too. One of the biggest additions to this build is support for Amazon's relatively new KF8 ebook file format. Originally revealed back in October 2011 (and officially released this January), KF8 allows publishers and content creators greater flexibility when it comes to text formatting and image integration into ebooks.

He lives in L.A, and he lives in London. ?While having a trans-Atlantic relationship is tough, if there?s anything British celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham can prove is that long distance relationships can work. ?Married for 12 years, they just welcomed their fourth child. ?Their American counterparts, actors Brad Pitt and Angelia Jolie, have made it work, too. ?Despite separation between films, they?ve managed to stay in a committed relationship for seven years. ?They share six children.

But non-celebrities have remote relationships, too. ?In fact, more than 3.5 million Americans were in a long distance relationship in 2005, according to the latest statistics. ?With the development of new technology, that number is most likely on the rise. While us common folks can?t afford to jet set or send extravagant gifts, that doesn?t mean our long distance relationship can?t last just as long. ?Use these tips to help maintain your relationship like the stars:

1. Use All Forms of Communication: Let?s get the obvious out of the way?physical interaction is scarce, so communication is key. ?Text messaging, instant messaging or even Facebooking is a start, but make your ?communication? more interactive. ?Here are some examples:

Date nights: ?Skype Dates? are the norm?a designated time couples agree to video chat. ?But try to have a real date instead. ?Each week pick a movie and a meal to prepare or purchase. ?Arrange your laptop, screen facing you. ?Eat/engage in conversation like in a restaurant. ?Then, pop in the movie.? This way, you can hear and see each other?s reactions to scenes. ?Bonus: movie-goers won?t tell you to pipe down.

-? Send photos: Sending self-portraits are great, but always try to send photos of things that you find interesting or funny. ?It will allow your mate to get more in-tune with your personality and some insight into your world.

Make videos: Hearing someone?s voice and seeing their face is more personable than a text. ?But people don?t always have time to videochat. ?Instead of sending a text, create a 30-second SMS video. ?Your significant other can view or respond when they have time, but it?s still special. ?There are apps that deliver ?voice text messages,? like Voxer.

Get Addresses: This includes home and work address. ?Sending your mate a gift for no reason, like flowers, can keep a smile on your mate?s face. ?Remember that you can also treat your boo to lunch or dinner, because it?s easy to get online and order a pizza that can be delivered to his or her front door. ?You can send traditional letters, too. ?There is something incredibly personable about seeing someone?s handwriting.

3. Schedule Monthly Meetings: You can talk for hours, but unless you see each other in the flesh at least once a month, your relationship will most likely fizzle. ?There are exceptions, like military relationships, which don?t have the luxury. ?But for those that can travel at their own leisure, schedule monthly visits. ?Traveling back and forth can get expensive, so switch off.

4. Be Secure with the Relationship: Lastly, most remote relationships fail due to lack of trust. ?While understandable, if there is no trust, you shouldn?t be together. ?Try not to let your jealousy get the best of you. ?That said, never completely ignore your intuition either. ?If something doesn?t feel right, speak up.

Lawyer prepares to meet Afghan killings suspect

SEATTLE (AP) ? A Seattle defense attorney prepared to meet Monday with Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, who is facing formal charges in an attack on two slumbering Afghan villages that left 16 people dead, including nine children.

John Henry Browne flew to Kansas Sunday ahead of his first face-to-face meeting with the 10-year Army veteran, who is being held in an isolated cell at Fort Leavenworth's military prison.

Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman Rebecca Steed said Bales would be able to meet Browne in what is described as a privileged visit. Along with medical visits, such meetings are generally more private than others conducted in the prison.

Bales, 38, hasn't been charged in the March 11 shootings, which have endangered relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan and threaten to upend U.S. policy over the decade-old war.

But formal charges are expected to be filed within a week and if the case goes to court the trial will be held in the United States, said a legal expert with the U.S. military familiar with the investigation.

That expert said charges were still being decided and that the location for any trial had not yet been determined. If the suspect is brought to trial, it is possible that Afghan witnesses and victims would be flown to the United States to participate, he said.

Military lawyers say once attorneys involved in the initial investigation of an alleged crime involving a service member have what they believe to be a solid understanding of what happened and are satisfied with the evidence collected, they draft charges and present them to a commander. That person then makes a judgment on whether there is probable cause to believe that an offense was committed and that the accused committed it.

That commander then "prefers" the charges to a convening authority, who typically is the commander of the brigade to which the accused is assigned but could be of higher rank.

Bales' defense team said in a statement late Saturday that "it is too early to determine what factors may have played into this incident and the defense team looks forward to reviewing the evidence, examining all of Sergeant Bales' medical and personnel records, and interviewing witnesses."

The lawyers' statement also said Bales' family was "stunned in the face of this tragedy, but they stand behind the man they know as a devoted husband, father and dedicated member of the armed services."

Military officials have said that Bales, after drinking on a southern Afghanistan base, crept away March 11 to two villages overnight, shooting his victims and setting many of them on fire. Nine of the 16 killed were children and 11 belonged to one family.

Court records and interviews in recent days have revealed that Bales had a string of commendations for good conduct after four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he also faced a number of troubles in recent years: a Florida investment job went sour, his Seattle-area home was condemned as he struggled to make payments on another, and he failed to get a recent promotion.

Legal troubles included charges that he assaulted a girlfriend and, in a hit-and run accident, ran bleeding in military clothes into the woods, court records show. He told police he fell asleep at the wheel and paid a fine to get the charges dismissed, the records show.

Browne, 65, has represented clients ranging from serial killer Ted Bundy to Colton Harris-Moore, known as the "Barefoot Bandit." He has said he has handled only three or four military cases. Bales will also have at least one military lawyer.

Tall and stylish, Browne has been a prominent figure in Washington state legal circles since the 1970s, known equally for his zeal in representing his clients and his flair before television cameras.
