Advanced Blocking: 2 Day Filmmaking ... - Film Directing Tips

When you first start directing, blocking actors in a scene can be one of the hardest (and most embarrassing) parts of your job. If you get it wrong here, you could waste valuable shooting time trying to get out of the mess you created!

But like anything else in life, blocking takes practice and the more times you do it, the more comfortable you will become.

Blocking is simply working out the details of the actor?s moves in relation to the position of the camera. Because viewer emotion is the ultimate goal of each scene, how (and why) the actors move, and where you place the camera, involves knowing what emotion you want the audience to experience at any given moment.

Audiences today are very sophisticated and they will assume that every shot, movement or word of dialogue in a film is there to further the central idea. Therefore, each shot you use can either enhance or detract the audience?s understanding of what the scene is really about and what the characters are feeling.

To help you enhance your blocking skills, I have partnered with Raindance Canada again for another weekend workshop called Advanced Blocking on December 8 & 9, 2012 in Toronto, Canada.

Glenn Cardwell: Tea and coffee break | stoptbpartners.org

Tea and coffee break

Humans have enjoyed tea and coffee for quite some time. Coffee was being drunk in Europe in the mid-17th century, while tea was supposedly consumed by the Chinese 4500 years ago, although this strongly disputed as the first mention of tea in a Chinese text was only 2000 years ago. Tea arrived in Europe around the same time as coffee. A fascinating history of both beverages can be found in Tom Standage?s [http://tomstandage.wordpress.com/books/a-history-of-the-world-in-six-glasses/ A history of the world in 6 glasses].Long time readers will remember I have said good things about tea and coffee before, because I prefer a positive food story rather than the scare stories enjoyed by others. It is always comforting to have science on your side. A meta-analysis (Mostofsky 2012) crunched all the research papers between 1966-2011, which included 140,000 coffee drinkers. They concluded: ?Moderate coffee consumption is inversely associated with the risk of heart failure, with the largest inverse association observed for consumption of 4 servings per day.? And it didn?t matter whether you?re a boy or a girl. With four cups of coffee a day there was a 11% lower risk of heart failure. Any benefit was negated once you reached 10 cups a day. The analysis took account of body weight, alcohol consumption and smoking, as is always the way in making sense of research. Some scientists who live just down the road from me at the University of Western Australia took a look at both tea and coffee and the potential risk of heart disease (B?hn 2012). They also were positive about a lower risk of heart disease in tea and coffee consumers after reviewing the published evidence. Tea seemed to improve the normal functioning of the arterial walls, lower triglycerides, inhibit inflammation and LDL-cholesterol oxidation (the latter two significantly contribute to atherosclerosis) and even lower the risk of stroke. Both tea and coffee are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The association seems to be strongest with coffee, possibly due to the chlorogenic acids in coffee.Difficult to say precisely, but there is general agreement that 3-5 cups a day is having a useful effect on your health. They did emphasise that genetics could be playing an important role, meaning we can?t say that everyone will benefit from tea and coffee. For example, those with the polymorphism CYP1A2 in the P450 enzyme (that?s laboratory clever people talk I think) are slow caffeine metabolisers, and actually have a higher risk of a heart attack with caffeinated drinks. All the same, it sounds very encouraging to me. Is there a ?yes, but...?"Isn?t there always? Generally, the studies rely on self-reported tea and coffee consumption and only one point in time. If you believe that tea and coffee are ?bad? then you will probably fib about how much you guzzle, and often people just plain ?forget? how much they drink and therefore under-report. Or they may have changed drinking habits over time depending upon what they read in the paper. Association is not necessarily cause and effect. It could also be that the folk enjoying a brew three or four or five times a day might also eat more vegetables, watch only documentaries, cook proper meals, help their neighbours, give to charity, walk the dog and hug the kids.Nevertheless, when the numbers are given a thorough massage, it looks like moderate tea and coffee drinkers come out ahead in the health stakes,If you drink tea or coffee, feel very comfortable with the habit. All the evidence suggests that up to five cups a day is fine and may even be a generous leg-up for your health. I suspect that even 6-8 cups a day is OK. Twenty cups? I?m not so sure. Worth considering a cut back. No-one is certain what specific compounds in tea and coffee are responsible for their proposed protection. There are many biologically active compounds, both known and unknown, in tea and coffee. Between you and I, six cups of tea a day find their way down my throat. They are big cups and I ain?t worried in the slightest. Hopefully, before I die, science will reveal why tea helped me live to 105. Mostofsky E et al. PT Types:Geriatric,Pediatric,Orthopedic,Neurological,Cardiovascular

Physical therapy treatment involves different techniques in helping people regain and maximize the mobility of their muscles and joints. A physical therapy treatment is needed in order to expedite the healing and repairing of damaged musculoskeletal areas of the body.

physical therapy

Physiotherapists are the ones who help patients in determining the kind of physical therapy that they need. Some of the most common types of physical therapy are the following:

This is a kind of therapy that is commonly applied to older adults. Some of those conditions that can be treated using geriatric physical therapy include arthritis, osteoporosis, incontinence, hip and joint replacement and Alzheimer?s disease. This kind of physical therapy is being applied in order to help older adults restore their mobility.

It is also being used to help aging individuals increase their level of fitness. Geriatric physical therapy is also commonly applied to reduce pain in people who have been through an accident or a stroke. It also works to help older adults improve their balance, strength, and confidence.

Pediatric Physical Therapy

This is a kind of therapy that may be given from infancy until the period of adolescence. It is being used to assist in the early detection of any problems in health especially to children who have suffered from physical injuries and diseases.

Pediatric physical therapy focuses on helping children attain motor skills, balance and coordination. This kind of therapy is very useful for children with cerebral palsy, torticollis and other developmental delays. Furthermore, pediatric physical therapy helps promote independence and enhance learning opportunities to children with disabilities.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

This kind of physical therapy helps in the diagnosis, treatment and management of people with disorders and injuries of their musculoskeletal. Those individuals who have been through orthopedic surgery also need to be treated using orthopedic physical therapy.

This kind of therapy is usually being applied in an out-patient clinical setting. Strength training, hot and cold packs, as well as joint mobilizations are also being used in this kind of therapy in order to speed up the process of recovery. Neuromuscular reeducation and electrical muscle stimulation such as electrotherapy and cryotherapy are also used in conjunction with orthopedic physical therapy to expedite the healing process.

Neurological Physical Therapy

Neurological physical therapy is used for treatment and evaluation of people who have problems in their nervous system. Some of the conditions that require the help of a neurological therapist include spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, vestibular disorders, brain injury, etc. In addition, those individuals who are suffering from paralysis, poor balance and vision impairment may also benefit from this kind of physical therapy.

After experiencing an injury, there are some areas of the person?s cells in the brain and spinal cord which were not injured. But, with the help of neurological physical therapists, the individual will be able to retain his ability to control some of the function that is lost when the injury occurred.

This is because neurological therapists possess special knowledge in teaching people how to become mobile and functional again after an injury.

Cardiovascular Physical Therapy

This is a kind of physical therapy that is being applied to patients who have problems with their heart and circulatory system. It works to help people increase their range of motion and their endurance after undergoing a surgery. Cardiovascular physical therapy is also applied to people who are diagnosed of a heart disease. Some patients who also benefit from this type of therapy are those who are suffering from lung cancer and cystic fibrosis.

Physical therapists usually spend a minimum of 45 minutes with their patients. This length of time is also crucial towards establishing a healthy patient-therapist relationship. Furthermore, this amount of time spent will help patients to be relieved from stress and anxiety caused by the physical discomforts of an injury.

These things are also essential towards helping the patient in their recovery period. In most cases, physical therapists also need to work with physicians, occupational l therapists and pathologists to be able to give each patient the best kind of treatment.

Source Marketing Direct: Short-term Thinking Not Beneficial for UK ...

(1888PressRelease) Source Marketing Direct, London based marketing and sales firm, have backed the government funded report released to BBC on Monday the 23rd July 2012. The report findings suggested ?short term? thinking by investors is benefiting the financial sector, not businesses and individual savers resulting in a gap in economic growth.

John Kay of the London School of Economics was commissioned by Business Secretary Vince Cable to probe the UK finance market specifically investigating UK equity markets and long term decision making. Kay wrote ?Over the last 10 years, companies have done OK, people in the financial sector have made a lot of money, and savers have done pretty badly?. Source Marketing Direct imply the report highlights that for individual savers (the average UK worker) return on investments have been poor, largely due to the middlemen (banks, financial investment institutions) taking their cut. Kay continued ?Anyone who manages money or advises people on how to invest their money ought to have an obligation to put their clients? interests first?.

Source Marketing Direct, Managing Director, Hector Montalvo commented ?As a business owner, I found the report very interesting. I understand how it in some situations it is almost too easy to only look at the short term. I can recall a few instances in my career where I stopped looking at our long term objectives and focused really only on the short term status of Source Marketing Direct. I forgot to look at the longevity of clients and business partners; instead I was focussed on just trying to turn a better immediate profit. I think John Kay?s report highlights a fundamental area of concern for the UK. The result of my own short term thinking on Source Marketing Direct was definitely not that positive, I am just lucky that I learnt that lesson very early on in my career. Just imagining this ?short term? thinking on a larger scale, when we are talking about people?s savings and investment?s for their future is downright scary!?

Source Marketing Direct has continued to deliver return by expanding their services throughout the UK. Managing Director Hector Montalvo backed Kay?s recommendation that long term thinking will aid in improving our economic growth. He comments ?Learning to look long term is a skill that takes time to hone and develop. We are a nation of ?now? but this kind of thinking has got us to where we are today. As the report highlighted the average saver, and the average company are doing ok, not great, but ok. The financial sector however has come out on top because they are taking immediate cuts of investments that then don?t return what they were meant too. Kay?s idea that they should be paid on long term results makes sense to me and I am sure to every other business owner out there ? you get paid when you deliver what you promised?.

Source Marketing Direct is proud to be able to contribute to the UK economy, having recently released their financial results for 2011, the small business for the 3rd consecutive year have turned over an average of just over half a million a year solely from its UK operations.

PFT: Harbaugh says SF has 5 No. 1 receivers

Casey Hampton, Alameda Ta'ammuAP

When Pittsburgh opened last season by taking a one-sided beatdown in Baltimore, Warren Sapp proclaimed that the Steelers were ?old, slow and it?s over.? Casey Hampton is, at age 35, the second-oldest Steeler. And at well over 300 pounds and coming off a torn ACL, he may be the slowest Steeler as well. But he insists that it?s not over.

?They?ve been saying that for how long?? Hampton said, via the Associated Press. ?They?ve been saying, ?You?re getting old,? and all that for years, and year in and year out we do our thing. So I don?t see it being any different this year.?

The Steelers aren?t as old as they used to be, with aging veterans James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke and Hines Ward retiring this offseason. Hampton said the Steelers have the right players in place to replace those longtime teammates.

?No question about it, when you?ve been around those guys 10-plus years, it?s definitely different,? Hampton said. ?But that?s part of it. You see guys come and go all the time. Those are definitely special guys, but I think those guys will fill in and do their best to make up for it.?

Hampton is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he says he?ll be ready to go when he needs to go.

?I don?t have no problem with being on it as long as I need to be,? Hampton said. ?I just want to get it right and be right when I?m out there. I don?t want to be out there hobbling messing around; I wanna be out there ready to go.?

And Hampton thinks the Steelers are ready to go to the postseason again, regardless of anyone saying he?s old and slow.

Anti-nuclear human chain to ring Japan parliament

Thousands of people are expected to form a "human chain" around Japan's parliament on Sunday to demonstrate against the use of nuclear power following last year's atomic crisis at Fukushima.

It will be the latest in a string of protests in Japan, which has seen a rising tide of anti-nuclear sentiment since Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda in June ordered the restart of two reactors.

Noda defended the move citing looming power shortages after Japan switched off its 50 nuclear reactors -- which provided the resource-poor country with a third of its energy -- in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

Weekly demonstrations outside the prime minister's residence have drawn tens of thousands of people and a rally in west Tokyo earlier this month saw a crowd that organisers claimed was about 170,000-strong.

The Sunday demonstrations, scheduled to start about 3:30 pm (0630 GMT), will see a march through the capital before protesters form a human chain around the legislature in the evening to demand a "swift abolition of nuclear power".

Early Sunday a dozen police vehicles were stationed on the street facing the prime minister's residence and the parliament.

Hiroshi Sakurai, a 65-year-old painter, said he arrived on the street to join the anti-nuclear rally for the first time.

"After the Fukushima disaster, I came to feel strongly that it is human arrogance to think that we can control nuclear power with our technology," he told AFP.

Protest organiser Kaori Echigo said demonstrators from across the nation of 127 million people were expected to descend on Tokyo for the march.

"Not only people from Tokyo but also people from Hokkaido (in the north), Nagano (in central Japan) and Osaka are expected to come by bus," Echigo told AFP.

The latest rally comes less than a week after a damning government-backed report on last year's crisis said Japanese officials and Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), operator of the crippled Fukushima plant, ignored the risk of an atomic accident because they believed in the "myth of nuclear safety".

A separate parliamentary report said the worst nuclear accident in a generation was a man-made disaster, marked by a lack of oversight and collusion between TEPCO, the government and regulators.

The giant utility largely cleared itself of blame, saying the size of last year's earthquake and tsunami was beyond all expectations and could not have reasonably been foreseen.

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, crippled cooling equipment at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, triggering meltdowns that spewed radioactivity and forced tens of thousands of residents to flee.

The rising anti-nuclear sentiment in Japan has also led to the launch of Greens Japan, a political organisation aiming to field candidates with an environmental agenda in parliamentary elections.

"A party that strongly pursues environmental policies is needed," Akira Miyabe, the group's 59-year-old deputy head, is quoted by Kyodo News as saying at an inaugural meeting on Saturday.

Sony rep confirms some 2011 Xperia handsets won't be tasting Google's Jelly Bean

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Bean questions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?

Deadly Ebola outbreak in Uganda, health officials confirm

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.

"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.

Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.

On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.

Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.

Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories. There have been isolated cases since, such as in 2007 when an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola killed at least 37 people in Bundibugyo, a remote district close to the Congolese border, but none as deadly as in 2000.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A CDC factsheet on Ebola says the disease is "characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding may be seen in some patients."

Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.

The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person, or objects that have been contaminated with infected secretions. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.

In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.

Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.

"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."

The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.

"Their lives are at stake," he said.

Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

Man hides cash in oven; cash gets baked by accident

Australia man's cash is baked in his oven. (NineMSN)

One man probably has learned a costly lesson about where he hides his cash.

The unidentified father from Sydney, Australia, sold his car last weekend. The $15,000 (approximately $15,652 in U.S. dollars) in proceeds was earmarked for his mortgage payment and other bills, according to Australian media. Opting not to squirrel away the loot in a mattress or bury it in his backyard, he decided to hide it his oven, which rarely gets used.

Bad move: Turns out, his wife decided to use the oven that day, preheating it for chicken nuggets for their two children and, yes, cooked the cash.

"It was everything I had," he told the news station. "I've got nothing to my name. That money was supposed to go towards my mortgage."

His wife was equally distraught and, reportedly, could not stop crying when telling her husband after she discovered what happened: The cash was baked into a colorful burnt mess.

The man reached out to his lender and the Reserve Bank of Australia for help.

The Reserve Bank advises people to take damaged currency to a bank. According to the Reserve Bank policy, "if several pieces of the same banknote are presented, the Reserve Bank's policy is for each piece to be worth a share of the value in proportion to its size... The combined value paid should be the face value of the original banknote."

Day in the Life of a Future Facebook Phone

Dateline: July 26, 2013.

A gentle trilling on the bedside table rouses me from slumber; I fumble for the familiar blue-edged smartphone, and click its single button -- adorned with a thumbs-up logo -- to quell the alarm.

[More from Mashable: ?Advanced Pimpin? on Facebook Derails Woman?s Legal Case]

The phone snaps to life; as per usual, it drops in a few notifications then takes me straight to my Smart Feed. I remember not so long ago, when my phone's default screen was a tray full of apps. Why, I wonder, did I ever want that terrifying level of choice? Just remind me about my appointments and to-dos, take me straight to the feed and be done with it. I can always swipe to the side to access my Facebook apps should I need them.

I spend a happy few minutes idly flicking through the feed. There aren't too many sponsored stories at the moment; it's mostly Instagram shots and the occasional news headline. The Facebook OS has learned my habits; it knows that's about all I can cope with first thing in the morning.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Has 955 Million Active Users ? Still Shy of a Billion]

As I fix the coffee and potter about the kitchen, one new sponsored story does get my attention -- it's a local flower store, reminding me about my wife's birthday tomorrow. (Evidently it waited until our phones were sufficiently far apart to pop up.) The store has grabbed a picture of her smiling, next to a bouquet it thinks appropriate based on past purchases.

Well, I don't want to put that little effort into it. So I tap a button to turn the ad into a reminder; later in the morning, I'll click on it again to call the shop, customize the bouquet, and send them a virtual card I've scrawled out on the screen.

On the train into work, I make a few quick moves in a couple of Zynga games -- didn't their fortunes turn around when the Facebook phone launched -- then plug in my headphones. Instantly, the Smart Feed transforms into a selection of Spotify songs and viral videos. I tap through the latter so I can get a jump on conversations at the watercooler.

At my desk, the feed transforms into news stories (with a special preference for ones it knows my colleagues have clicked on). There's nothing major; a couple more pieces speculating on iOS 7, and how much it can compete with the Facebook OS. Rumor has it that Apple is working with Twitter, its new best friend, to put a different kind of news feed front and center.

Makes a lot of sense, as the comments point out; the company is going to have to do something radical to restore the luster of the iPhone, especially after Facebook started swiping Apple's best mobile engineers last year. Besides, the Facebook phone is heavily subsidized by advertisers; it's hard to compete with almost free.

I make a few free calls throughout the morning, using the phone's Skype integration. It's as simple as holding the thumbs-up button and saying my contact's name. Most of my friends have a similar device; those that don't, I can still reach via their desktop. Everyone keeps a Facebook tab open these days in case they miss a call.

Lunchtime, and my screen fills up with coupons from local merchants. I dismiss them all with a tap, head to my favorite sandwich place, point the phone at a QR code reader. Hey presto: my tenth sandwich is free. The Facebook OS was rolled out with a massive small business partner program; Zuckerberg always said that was where the big money was.

I spend much of the afternoon responding to Facebook messages, which is slowly replacing email across the company. But old habits die hard, so I have to swipe up to the Gmail app, too. Google was smart to get on the platform early, and Facebook was smart to build its entire OS on a modified and fully licensed Android kernel. That helped keep the peace between the two tech giants.

On the train home, an "on this day in history" news item catches my eye. Turns out it's exactly a year since Facebook's first faltering earnings call -- the one in which Zuckerberg famously denied the company was "building" its own phone. Well, of course it wasn't building the phone itself, I smile to myself, turning the handset over and glancing at its HTC logo.

What we should have listened to was another quote from the call: "having a device wherever you are creates more opportunities for sharing and connecting." That was the understatement of the year.

SEE ALSO: Zuckerberg Denies the Facebook Phone. Where's the Evidence?

But it gets me thinking, and after dinner I tap out a post on my Timeline, imagining an alternative reality in which Facebook didn't spring its compelling mobile OS on an unsuspecting world. Imagine it: the stock still slumped around the $24 mark instead of a few hundred dollars beyond it; the social network still getting dinged for its poor mobile apps; Apple and Google still ascendant. Perhaps it might be a better world, without this devilishly addictive device supported by just about every advertiser on the planet.

There's not too much time to think about it, though. The NyQuil app wants my attention, offering to set my alarm now for a perfect night's sleep. I yawn. Tomorrow is another ad-driven day.

Amtrak plans $7 billion upgrade of Washington, DC, station

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Amtrak, the U.S. passenger rail service, plans a $7 billion expansion of Washington, D.C.'s Union Station with the goal of making it a high-speed rail and commercial hub, Amtrak said on Wednesday.

The proposal calls for doubling the number of trains that can be handled at the crowded site, the second-busiest Amtrak station in the United States, Amtrak said in a statement.

The plan also proposes 3 million square feet (278,709 square meters) in commercial, retail and residential development at the site just north of the U.S. Capitol.

"This plan will transform the station into a world-class transportation hub to serve the region and the mobility needs of generations of passengers yet to come," Amtrak President and Chief Executive Joe Boardman said in the statement.

Amtrak has said an upgrade at Union Station would include six new high-speed tracks. The lines could cut travel times between Washington and New York City to 94 minutes, about one-third faster than Amtrak's current Acela trains.

Amtrak gave no details about how the cost of $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion would be paid for.

President Barack Obama this month signed into law $105 billion in transportation spending over 27 months. Revenues have fallen from the main transportation funding source, the federal gasoline tax, as the economy has cooled and gas prices have risen.

Congressional Republicans have been reluctant to pay for expansion of high-speed rail.

The Amtrak plan calls for doubling the number of trains Union Station can handle and improving conditions for passengers. The station was built in 1907 and handles 100,000 passenger trips a day, with demand on the rise.

Much of the expansion would come underground, where Amtrak wants to add new platforms, tracks and shopping.

The Washington proposal comes two weeks after Amtrak announced a $151 billion improvement plan aimed at transforming high-speed rail in the northeastern United States. It would need substantial support from states and the federal government to carry out the plan.

Eric Dane is leaving 'Grey's Anatomy'

By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

Eric Dane as Mark Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy."

"Grey's Anatomy" will be down another doctor in season nine. Eric Dane, who plays fan favorite Mark Sloan aka McSteamy, is departing the ABC hit series, sources confirm to us. (No, we're not crying. We just have something in our eye!)

While Mark was near death at the end of the season eight finale, creator Shonda Rhimes hints that fans possibly haven't seen the last of the hot doc on Grey's Anatomy.

More from E! ABC unveils premiere dates for 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Revenge,' 'Once Upon a Time' and more!

In a statement to TV Line, who first reported the news of his departure, Dane says, "I am extremely grateful to everyone at 'Grey's,' ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run. It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes."

Rhimes also issued a statement addressing Dane's departure. "We're a big family here at 'Grey's' with a long history together and Eric will always remain an important part of our family," she says. "I wish him the best and I look forward to watching him as he continues to steam up the big and small screen."

Rhimes calls Mark "one of the most beloved characters" on the show and says the actor "did not come to this decision lightly, but after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end."

In the season eight finale, Mark watched helplessly as his love Lexie (Chyler Leigh) died after suffering injuries from the shocking plane crash; Mark ended the finale near death and distraught over his loss.

More from E! See pics of 'Grey's Anatomy' OMG moments?

When we chatted with Rhimes after the finale, she hinted that everyone wouldn't survive the plane crash.

"They're still out there in the forest, and we don't know if they are going to be OK," she teased. "We left it open for a reason because...I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn't mean they're going to be alive when the season starts up. We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season."

"Grey's Anatomy's" ninth season premieres Sept. 27 on ABC.
