Naomi Judd gets her own call-in radio show

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Naomi Judd's new limited-run SiriusXM radio talk show has no safety net and even the country star says with a laugh she isn't sure that's a great idea.

"If you've been at a press conference, you know I've said things I haven't thought of ? whoa," Judd said. "That's why they asked me. And there's no 5-second delay. I'm wandering the woods without a map."

Judd hopes "Think Twice," which starts its six-week run of hour-long Friday morning episodes June 8, will be a place the satellite radio network's 22 million subscribers can turn to for a free-form discussion of ideas and topics, from current events and politics to hot-button issues like abortion and evolution.

"I want people to think twice," Judd said in a phone interview. "That's why I came up with the title, because in today's culture, in this ADHD culture, people don't understand the real important stuff. I want people to be talking about this stuff at the water cooler, around the kitchen table. I may have a total brainiac on who's one of the most important people in the world, but I want to translate it for standard-issue folks because that's where my heart is. I want to tell them how this is affecting their everyday life."

First up, though, the 66-year-old Grammy winner will examine her own life and her relationship with daughter Ashley Judd. Mother and daughter will sit down together in front of a studio audience next Tuesday to tape the debut episode.

Judd's voice filled with emotion when she described her feelings about the interview. She said that though the two have spent time together since Ashley Judd published a memoir last year that placed stress on their relationship, they have not spoken about the book or the revelations that Ashley was sexually abused as a child, including by a family member.

When "All That is Bitter & Sweet" was published last year, Ashley Judd said she'd never told her mother of the abuse. Both Naomi Judd and her other daughter, duo partner Wynonna Judd, say they also suffered sexual abuse.

"I admit I'm a little nervous about doing it because this is the first time that Ashley and I have ever done anything together," Judd said. "And I'm going to ask her about what happened in our relationship ? whoa, I have to take a deep breath before that one."

Judd said she would also ask her daughter about her feelings over the recent cancellation of her television series "Missing" and her emotions watching her husband, three-time Indy 500 champion Dario Franchitti race in the aftermath of the death of his close friend Dan Wheldon.

"I know she'll want to talk about her severe depression and share some ways that have gotten her to such a happy, stable place," Judd said. "But I think really it's probably going to be about our relationship because there's some ... Oh, boy."

Judd says she has now read "Bitter & Sweet." In the end, she said she felt it was her duty as a parent to read the book. Now she thinks the things she learned during the process can be instructive for parents who are dealing with similarly difficult issues.

"I had to take a deep breath before I opened the book and I read it by myself when I was in a good mood and had space and time," Judd said. "I knew I would probably be hollering out loud at certain things ? 'It didn't happen that way! I was there!' ? but (I was) acknowledging that anyone in a relationship has a completely different reality, and I wanted to know what my daughter's personal experiences and journeys were."

The remainder of the season will be live call-in shows that will be replayed Saturday morning. She's pulling her guest list from her personal rolodex, which is full of Nobel Prize winners and leaders in the science, medical and technology fields, deep thinkers and interesting people.

Guests already scheduled include National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis S. Collins and Dr. Helen Morrison, a forensic psychiatrist specializing in serial killers. And there's a handful of physicists she'd love to quiz.

Yes, physicists.

"I don't take vacations," Judd said. "I love the ocean, but I'm just not one to lie on the beach. So for three days I went up to Princeton for a seminar on quantum physics."

It's that sort of insatiable curiosity she wants to share with her listeners.

"I hope to blow away stereotypes," she said. "I'm not just a big-haired redhead country singer who dresses flamboyantly, has this wicked sense of humor and wears rhinestones. They have no idea about my underground secret life for 20 years."

Poll names Anchorage residents worst-dressed

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Anchorage residents are apparently not dressing to impress.

That's the upshot of Travel and Leisure Magazine's reader poll, which put the residents of Alaska's largest city at the bottom when it comes to being on the top of style.

The magazine ran an online poll asking readers to rank 35 American cities on such things as best nightlife, best burgers, best New Year's Eve celebrations, etc.

By a three-tenths of a point, Anchorage landed just below Salt Lake City for having the worst-dressed residents.

"I think it's a little ridiculous, to be honest," said Hillary Walker, the assistant manager at lulu e. bebe fashion boutique in Anchorage. "I think dressing well is about feeling comfortable, experimenting, expressing yourself through your clothing. I think people in Anchorage do a great job with that."

Some others in Anchorage apparently feel differently. The unscientific poll was split between visitors to cities and residents. When you break down the worst dressed list even further, Anchorage residents rated themselves second-to-last, with Salt Lake City residents putting Utah's largest metro at the bottom of the rag pile.

The low ranking for Anchorage doesn't surprise state of Alaska labor economist Neal Fried, who went to work Thursday wearing his signature bow tie, this one featuring characters from "The Simpsons."

He discounts the theory that Anchorage residents don't shell out big bucks for fashion because of the higher prices for clothing, especially since he calls Anchorage a wealthy city ? with a median income 41 percent above the national average.

Instead, he surmises it's the lifestyle of Anchorage residents and the city's weather.

Anchorage is an outdoors city, with downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, hiking, running and biking leading residents to resorts and trails all year long.

Often, you'll see people out to dinner with friends and their dress may appear they're better suited for a campfire.

"You can go hiking and then straight to dinner, and you might be at a five-star restaurant," Walker said. "You have to have a versatile wardrobe."

"It's more important to get out and do things and meet with friends, then I think to focus on being fashion-appropriate and savvy for every event," said Kris Natwick, membership director for the Anchorage Downtown Partnership.

And there's a good reason you see women favoring a pair of bunny boots over heels in the winter, which can stretch from October to May.

"You're not going to wear high heels out when it's been snowing six, eight, 10, 12 inches," Natwick said. "You're going to dress appropriately for the weather."

Anchorage had a record snow this past winter, with more than 11 feet. That surpassed a nearly 60-year-old record.

"It's really hard to be real stylish in February," Fried said. "But you know, it's easy to be stylish in LA in February."

Mayor Dan Sullivan takes the poor ranking in stride. He calls Anchorage a casual city because of not only the climate, but also because of the rugged, gritty work that people do in that weather.

"We feel very comfortable dressing down, and at the same time, being comfortable in the climate," said Sullivan, who wore a sport coat, dress shirt and Jerry Garcia tie to work Thursday. He joked he tries to dress "semi-mayoral on a daily basis."

But that doesn't mean you won't see Alaskans dressed to the nines at social events.

Sullivan notes that Anchorage was named No. 1 for jobs by Forbes this year, and the best winter city in America by livability.com. "We'll take the accolades along with the humorous other rankings."

For the record, the Travel and Leisure poll put New York City at the top for fashion.

"When you go to New York ... you're just happy to be in New York and you want to dress to impress," said Anchorage DJ Scott Root, who was manning his friend's hot dog stand in downtown Anchorage on Thursday. "There's a lot more fancier stuff there."

But in Anchorage, "it's all outdoors," Root said.

"I think we'd be embarrassed if we were on the top of the list," Fried said. "Actually, I think we're proud where we are."

Rich Beattie, executive director of travelandleisure.com, says he doesn't believe the low style ranking is necessarily a bad thing for Anchorage.

He said he's been to Anchorage and throughout Alaska, and the areas have so much going for them. In fact, poll voters placed Anchorage at No. 4 for the city with the best peace and quiet. It also ranked high for best summer and offbeat travel and pretty good for Fourth of July travel.

"I think they are reasons that people travel to certain cities, and it's not necessarily to dress up and be stylish and hang out with stylish people," Beattie said.

'Sex history' window to pedophile priest's mind

(AP) ? The priest always started his favorite "game" by having the young boy remove his underwear and put on loose-fitting shorts so he could fondle him more easily. Then, the Rev. Robert Van Handel would run his hands up and down the child's body as he stretched across his lap, Walkman headphones on his ears, pretending to be asleep.

The recollection appears in a 27-page "sexual history" written by Van Handel, a defrocked Franciscan cleric who is accused of molesting at least 17 boys, including his own 5-year-old nephew, local children in his boys' choir and students at the seminary boarding school where he taught.

The essay, penned for a therapy assignment and kept secret for years, provides a shockingly candid and detailed window into the troubled mind of a notorious pedophile priest. The narrative is believed to be the first of its kind to be publicly revealed through civil litigation despite years of lawsuits targeting sexually abusive priests.

Most confidential files unearthed in court cases only hint at the existence of sexual histories, which are a common part of therapy meant to be seen only by the priest and his psychologist, said attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who has handled more than 2,000 church abuse cases.

"This is unique," Anderson said. "It really is a glimpse into the mind of the molester."

Van Handel's narrative came to light as part of a $28 million settlement between the Franciscans and 25 clergy abuse victims six years ago that also called for disclosure of the religious order's internal files. The accused priests fought unsuccessfully to keep their documents private in a battle that went all the way to the California Supreme Court.

The Associated Press obtained more than 4,000 pages, including Van Handel's "sexual history," from a plaintiff's attorney last week.

Van Handel's account, written between 1993 and 1994 during his treatment at Pacific Treatment Associates in Santa Cruz, is corroborated by letters, victim interviews and court papers from his file. A probation officer also cited the narrative in a sentencing report.

In the essay, Van Handel ? who was himself molested by a priest at age 15 ? traces his perilous descent from a sexually repressed pre-teen terrified of puberty to a serial pedophile who handpicked his victims from the members of a prestigious boys' choir that he founded.

He seems mortified by his crimes but also entranced by them: He describes his "most beautiful" victim, a tanned and tow-headed child of seven, and talks about molesting a trio of brothers and taking nude pictures of the youngest sibling that were "quite artistic."

"Once, or perhaps more than that, I took him up into the tower which was stark concrete with steel barred windows and he posed as a prisoner with few clothes on. I took some photos of him tied up with a big rope," Van Handel recalls of the 7-year-old. "It was as though I could do anything with him that I wanted."

The priest would fondle his singers under the guise of tickling games or back rubs during one-on-one choir rehearsals. He had the boys play dart games that ended in sexually charged wrestling. He rubbed the genitals of high school seminary students in their dorms and photographed young boys in the shower on a choir trip to Europe.

Van Handel seems unaware of how serious his actions are and rarely expresses regret except to describe his paranoia when he thought he would be caught. Instead, he focuses on his own emotional needs in a rare moment of self-reflection.

"There is something about me that is happier when accompanied by a small boy," he writes. "Perhaps besides the sexual element, the child in me wants a playmate."

Van Handel, now 65, is a registered sex offender in Santa Cruz County. He did not return messages and his attorney, Robert "Skip" Howie, said he would instruct him not to comment. Howie said the disclosure of the private medical document will prevent the future identification and treatment of offenders.

"You want the person to be open in the interview, but you totally destroy that avenue if you make these records public," he said.

Seeing the document has been both painful and cathartic for those who recognize themselves in its pages. One victim said Van Handel's memories match perfectly with his own, despite the priest's vastly different perspective.

"It is really validating to read ? in his own words ? that what we've been saying really did happen. We had spoken the truth," said the man, one of the brothers molested by Van Handel. He requested anonymity to protect his siblings, who are not ready to speak publicly.

The priest begins by describing a lonely childhood with an authoritarian father who moved the family five times before Van Handel turned seven. The family of seven finally settled in Orange County when Van Handel was 10.

At age 13, Van Handel's father forced him to read a sex education book that terrified the young boy. He dreaded the onset of puberty, when he imagined sexual urges would be like "poison candy," and prayed to remain a child.

The next year, he entered St. Anthony's, the Franciscan junior seminary in Santa Barbara, to escape his father and his own sexual anxieties.

Instead, the young seminarian was molested by a priest as he lay in the infirmary. The priest told Van Handel that the molestation would draw out his fever by making him sweat. "While I don't think it is of crucial importance in my life, it is curious that this is nearly the exact activity I would perform 10 to 15 years later," Van Handel writes.

It wasn't until after high school, however, that Van Handel began to realize his sexual interests were abnormal.

He discovered pornography near his college seminary and purchased magazines featuring naked children. He used a telephoto lens to take pictures of young children splashing in the campus fountain and bought photography books featuring nude boys.

"I asked my best friend once if he saw anything 'special' in pictures of children and he said, 'No, not at all.' I began to realize that I was different," he writes. "Sometimes I worried about this, but I thought that as long as it was just a fantasy, there was no reason to panic."

It wasn't long, however, before Van Handel's fantasies became reality.

In 1970, he moved to Berkeley to pursue a master's degree and started a boys' choir for local children. There, he molested a boy of about seven, apparently his first victim. Around the same time, he molested his 5-year-old nephew.

Van Handel tried on two occasions to address his blossoming pedophilia by talking to a Franciscan counselor, but he was so vague that the man never understood.

"I would hint, he would stab and we missed each other entirely," he wrote.

In 1975, Van Handel was ordained and was sent to St. Anthony's, where he had been molested more than a decade before.

The young priest hated the assignment and started another boys' choir as a release ? and was soon molesting its members.

He preferred boys between the ages of 8 and 11, he wrote, and their parents always dropped their children off as requested because they trusted the priest implicitly.

"It was clearly my choir and the fulfillment of my fondest dreams," he writes. "Now I understand that it was also a constant supply of attractive little boys."

Van Handel is detailed in his confessions, but seems oblivious to the damage he is doing. He recalls his surprise when one of his most frequent victims resisted him for the first time at age 11, after about four years of molestation.

"He started to cry and that snapped something in my head. For the first time, I was seeing signs that he really did not like this," Van Handel writes.

In 1983, Van Handel saw an article about another boys' choir director arrested for sex abuse. It threw him into a suicidal depression.

"For the first time it was before me that what I had been doing could be classified as criminal behavior," he writes. "I imagined every boy's parents read that article and decided to carefully question their sons about me."

The priest revealed his sexual fantasies to a psychologist but "never gave him enough information to report me," he writes.

In an attempt to reform, Van Handel dated three women, two of whom had children in his choir. He slept with one of the women twice and was terrified she would get pregnant.

"I felt a whole new world was opening up for me, and for the most part I felt really good about the experience," Van Handel writes. "I felt that I was normal."

Around the same time, Van Handel became rector of St. Anthony's and was assigned to investigate another priest accused of sexual abuse. He was shocked when he realized the priest's accusers ? two brothers ? were also victims of his.

In 1992, the parents of one of Van Handel's victims wrote him a letter and copied in the Franciscan leadership. Within months, the priest was removed from the ministry.

Two years later, Van Handel pleaded guilty to one count of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sentenced to eight years in prison. There were at least 15 other cases too old to prosecute, according to a police report.

A psychiatrist evaluating him for sentencing once asked Van Handel about his worst fear.

The priest's answer was specific: The public release of his sexual history.

Eurozone unemployment hits record high, seen rising

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone unemployment has hit a record high, and job losses are likely to keep climbing as the bloc's devastating debt crisis eats away at businesses' ability to hire workers while indebted governments continue to cut staff.

Around 17.4 million people were out of work in the 17-nation euro zone in April, or 11 percent of the working population, the highest level since records began in 1995, the EU's statistics office Eurostat said on Friday.

"This 11 percent level is going to continue edging up in the coming months and probably until the end of the year," said Francois Cabau, an economist at Barclays Capital who sees the euro zone's economy contracting 0.1 percent this year.

"The economic activity situation tells you the story of the labor market. There's been basically no economic growth since the fourth quarter of last year and indicators are pointing to very weak growth momentum for the second quarter," he said.

ING economist Martin van Vliet said he sees the unemployment rate reaching slightly above 11.5 percent if the economy starts to recover later this year. But if the downturn worsens, "the risk is for an even higher peak in unemployment," he said.

As the debt crisis intensifies, companies in the euro zone are trying to keep their labor costs low as they struggle with falling demand and profits, while a German-led drive to cut deficits and debt is pressuring governments to shrink spending.

But some economists say austerity policies in an economic downturn are self-defeating because governments receive less tax receipts as unemployment grows and must pay out more money in jobless benefits.

"The high level of unemployment is putting cyclical pressure on government expenditure in many of the euro zone's economies and that is contributing to the lack of confidence in many of the euro zone's sovereign debt markets," said Philip Shaw, chief economist at Investec bank in London.

"POISON FOR THE ECONOMY"

Although April's joblessness level was the same as March, as Eurostat revised upwards its earlier reading of 10.9 percent for the month, another 110,000 people were out of work in April and the jobless rate has risen every month over the past year.

While expected by economists polled by Reuters, the data came as a key business sentiment survey showed a deep slump in manufacturing across the euro zone and appeared to suggest the bloc's economy will shrink in the second quarter of this year.

The bloc narrowly avoided recession in the first three months of this year as the economy stagnated but did not contract. Still, the picture masks the wide divisions in the health of Europe's economy, and the same goes for joblessness.

While unemployment fell in Austria to just 3.9 percent in April, it rose to 24.3 percent in Spain, the highest in the euro zone. New data for stricken Greece was not immediately available, having reached 21.7 percent in February.

The number of people out of work also crept up in both France and Italy to 10.2 percent in April, the euro zone's second- and third-largest economies respectively.

Joblessness in Germany fell to 5.4 percent of the working population from 5.5 percent in March, although economists say given the weakening business sentiment, even Europe's largest economy cannot expect unemployment to fall much further.

"More uncertainty (from the debt crisis) would surely be poison for the economy and for companies' willingness to hire staff," Commerzbank analyst Eckart Tuchtfeld wrote in a note to clients.

HBT: Selig chastises Harrelson after on-air rant

In what will likely be the final chapter of the Hawk Harrelson rant, we learn that he was given a talking-to by Bud Selig yesterday and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf today:

?I talked to Bud Selig yesterday,? Harrelson told ESPNChicago.com?s Bruce Levine on Friday morning. ?We had a talk. Actually, Bud talked and I listened. If it was a prize fight, they would have stopped it in the first round.

?I also talked to Jerry, and I listened to him as well. That?s all I really have to say.?

No word on how many Advils Hawk has taken since he got off the phone with those guys.

We?ve had a lot of fun with this, but I do have one legitimate concern here: I hope this doesn?t chill announcers from noting and commenting on poor umpiring.

Because while?Harrelson?s went way over the top, acting on emotion and homerism as opposed to actually analyzing what happened, there is a lot more room for reasoned criticism of umpire?s calls in baseball broadcasts. Indeed, there should be more of it. Just not in the way Hawk went about it.
