Spring is almost here, which means we are getting ready to emerge from our parkas, go outside and absorb every morsel of sunshine. But unfortnately, spring doesn?t always bring us sunny days. So what can a family do when miserable skies have us locked in? Having had four children at home at one point makes one, let?s say ? resourceful in this arena. So here?s some ideas (new and old) drawn from my own childhood, motherhood, and well, googlehood ? to keep you and your family active, happy and sane!
- Board/Card Games: Great way for children to learn good sportsmanship, patience and how to follow directions.
- Build a Fort: Gather sheets, blankets and pillows from around the house and hang them from chairs, couches or walls to create a secretive fort for you and your children.
- Cooking/Baking: Bring the children into the kitchen and keep them busy by creating some of these easy, kid friendly recipes.
- Indoor Picnic: Make your favorite lunch and pack it up. Clear a space in your home to lay down a blanket and invite your kids to sit down with you and enjoy a picnic indoors.
- Day Trips: Day trips to a museum or an aquarium are a way to spend the day indoors with your kids learning and discovering together.
- Homemade Slime: This trick will keep your children busy for hours! Invite them into the kitchen to help you make this gooey recipe. After the slime is made, the children can play, mold and toy with the slime for the rest of the afternoon.
- Movie Day: Taking a group of children to the theater can be expensive, as ticket and popcorn prices are steadily on the rise. So stay in, pop your own corn and invite over some friends. Red Box is an easy, inexpensive way to rent as many movies as you like because they are only a dollar a day!
- Play Dress-up: Break out those clothes from before you had children and let the kids have at them. My children loved diving into my old clothes to play house or give a fashion show. You can go to bridal shops, costume shops or thrift stores to build an inexpensive collection.
- Make Shadow Puppets: The house may be dark on these rainy days ? create a stage with only a spotlight and a blank wall. All you need are your hands to let the show begin! Check out this site for some great shadow puppets.
- Play in the Rain: If it?s warm and not lightening out, sometimes you can?t help getting out there and playing in the rain. Put on those grubby clothes, goulashes and a raincoat, because those puddles are calling!
