Effective public relations (PR) work can help your business or organization to grow and thrive. PR is also known as publicity or communications. Many larger companies have corporate communications departments dedicated to communicating with the media and the public.

The main aim of PR is to increase public awareness of a certain business, organization or person without specifically selling or promoting their products or services.

PR is often confused with advertising. However, advertising and PR have different purposes. The purpose of advertising is sell a product or service, while the purpose of PR is to inform or educate. This may include disseminating information about how best to use or take care of your company?s products, how to install them, how to replace worn-out components, and so on.

Public relations work can also involve sharing human and general interest stories in a variety of media, such as how you set up your business or how your non-profit organization helps people in your local community. You can also use PR to gain media coverage for the launch or re-launch of your business or a special promotional event.

PR differs from advertising because the media coverage obtained is not paid for. This also means that you do not have any control over what is said about you, your company, and its products or services.

However, one advantage of PR over advertising is that consumers may place more trust in information disseminated by an impartial person than in an advertisement which is clearly self-promotional and is written and paid for by a specific company.

Whether you own a small business or work for a non-profit organization, effective public relations work can help you and/or your organization to gain positive media exposure. Other knock-on advantages of PR are increased awareness of you, your company or organization and its products, services and/or activities in the local community, nationally and/or globally, a higher level of trust in your organization, and a better reputation.
