Obama Stops by Marquette-Syracuse Basketball Game

ap obama ncaa game lt 130331 wblog Obama Stops by Marquette Syracuse Basketball Gameobama

WASHINGTON - President Obama caught a little bit of hoops fever Saturday afternoon, stopping by the Marquette-Syracuse NCAA men's college basketball tournament game at the Verizon Center.

The basketball-loving president didn't pick Marquette or Syracuse to make it to the Elite 8 in his bracket, but instead, thought Miami and Indiana would make it to that level. The president had picked Indiana to win it all, but the team was knocked out by Syracuse in the Sweet 16.

The president said he picked Syracuse to win other games at the urging of Vice President Joe Biden, who attended Syracuse for law school.

"Biden told me that if I didn't pick em' he wouldn't talk to me," Obama said while filling out his bracket with ESPN.

Earlier this week, the president acknowledged that his bracket is "busted." Three of his Final Four teams are still in the tournament.

While at the Verizon Center, the president talked with Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, also known as RGIII, according to a tweet from a reporter.

Outlook for immigration deal brightens

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prospects for a law to create a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants brightened on Saturday after major business and labor groups reached an agreement on a guest-worker program, a source familiar with the deal said.

The agreement was reached on Friday night in a conference call between the head of the Chamber of Commerce, Tom Donohue, and the president of the AFL-CIO labor organization, Richard Trumka, with New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer acting as the mediator, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A guest-worker program has been a major stumbling block to efforts by a bipartisan group of senators known as the Gang of Eight to reach a compromise on a way to create a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, most of whom are Hispanics.

Labor unions have argued against a guest-worker program, worrying that a flood of low-wage immigrant laborers would take away jobs from Americans. The agreement covers the pay levels for low-skilled workers and provides labor protections for American workers.

Under the deal, a new "W Visa" would be created for employers to petition for foreign workers in lesser skilled, non-seasonal non-agricultural occupations. This could include jobs in hospitality, janitorial, retail, construction and others.

The W Visa would not be considered a temporary visa as workers would have the ability to seek permanent status after a year, according to details of the agreement released by the AFL-CIO.

The program would begin on April 1, 2015, unless there is a need to extend the start date by six months.

At the beginning, 20,000 visas would be permitted and the figure would rise to 35,000 visas the following year, 55,000 in the third year and 75,000 in the fourth.

The cap can never be below 20,000 or above 200,000 in any year.

WOOING HISPANIC VOTERS

"We have created a new model, a modern visa system that includes both a bureau to collect and analyze labor market data, as well as significant worker protections," Trumka said in a statement. "We expect that this new program, which benefits not just business, but everyone, will promote long overdue reforms by raising the bar for existing programs."

Schumer briefed White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on Saturday on the breakthrough, the source said.

The agreement still must be approved by the Gang of Eight senators, four Democrats and four Republicans. If, as expected, they do so, a broad new immigration bill would be advanced in the Senate in the coming weeks.

In recent days, the immigration effort had been stalled by failure to forge an agreement on the guest-worker program, although the White House insisted that progress was being made.

President Barack Obama wants to fulfill a campaign pledge by gaining passage of a law that would create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants currently in the country. He has vowed to do what he can on immigration through executive actions in the absence of legislation.

Immigration long has been a controversial issue in the United States and previous efforts to craft a comprehensive overhaul of American immigration laws have failed, with Democrats and Republicans remaining far apart.

Many Republicans previously had taken a hard position against illegal immigrants. Obama's unsuccessful Republican challenger last year, Mitt Romney, had advocated "self-deportation" of illegal immigrants. Republicans in Arizona and other states passed tough laws cracking down on illegal immigrants.

But the mood for a deal is ripe because Republicans saw Hispanic-Americans vote overwhelmingly for Obama and other Democratic candidates in last November's elections and they need to woo this increasingly important voting bloc.

Many Republicans see gaining favor with Hispanic voters, who are 10 percent of the U.S. electorate and growing, as a matter of political survival.

Republicans want to ensure that security along the U.S.-Mexican border is improved before immigrants can get on a path to citizenship. Obama feels security is sufficient but this disagreement is not seen as a deal-breaker.

"We're seeing right now a good bipartisan spirit," Obama told Spanish-language network Univision on Wednesday. "I want to encourage that and hopefully we'll be able to get it done."

'Walking Dead' pics: Rick, others prep for battle

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

We know "The Walking Dead's" third-season finale will be a bloodbath. The only question is how many main characters will be lost in the battle between The Governor's Woodbury forces and Rick Grimes' new democracy.

    Gene Page / AMC

Will Michonne embrace the prison gang's all-for-one-and-one-for-all fightin' spirit? In one of several shots from "Welcome to the Tombs," exclusive to The Clicker, the sword fighter has returned to the prison, and clearly she and Rick have a lot to chat about. Although we bet he'll do most of the talking -- Ricky has some 'splainin' to do after nearly sacrificing her to the gubernatorial torture chamber.?

    Gene Page / AMC

And even as the Walkers roam the prison yard, Carl draws strength from the family picture he fought so desperately to retrieve from the Grimes' old house (with help from Michonne).

Texas retail gas prices drop 4 cents this week

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Retail gasoline prices across Texas have dropped 4 cents this week.

AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump fell to $3.53. The national average also has fallen, down to $3.64.

The association survey found Beaumont has the cheapest gasoline statewide at $3.39 per gallon. Dallas and Fort Worth have the most expensive retail gasoline in Texas at $3.62 per gallon.

Texas drivers on average are paying 28 cents less than this time last year.

AAA says it's too soon to determine whether retail prices have peaked for the spring because there's still refinery maintenance to be completed and much of the country has yet to transition to summer-blend gasoline.

Detrital zircon Hf isotopic compositions indicate a northern Caledonian connection for the Alexander terrane
    L. Beranek et al., Stockholm University, Geological Sciences, Svante Arrhenius vg 8, Stockholm, Stockholm 106 91, Sweden. Issue: April 2013. Originally posted online 19 Dec. 2012; http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/L255.1.

Earth's plate tectonic history during the Silurian and Devonian periods, approx. 400 million years ago, was dominated by the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and subsequent continent-continent collision between Laurentia (ancestral North America) and Baltica (ancestral northern Europe). This collision led to the rise of the Appalachian-Caledonian Mountains and the assembly of supercontinent Laurussia. To test ancient stratigraphic connections between the northern Caledonian mountains of Laurussia and crustal fragments now located in the North American Cordillera, Luke Beranek and colleagues acquired new analytical data from Silurian and Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Alexander terrane in the Saint Elias Mountains of Yukon and British Columbia, Canada. Their datasets indicate that terrestrial and shallow-marine rocks of the Alexander terrane, including distinctive red-bed sandstones, were sourced from northern Caledonian granitoids and are analogous to sedimentary units of the Old Red Sandstone in the present-day North Atlantic region. These data have major ramifications not only for the paleogeography and displacement history of the Alexander terrane, but also the proposed Caledonian affinities of other terranes in the North American Cordillera that underlie much of Alaska, British Columbia, and western United States.

Kinematic analysis of mlange fabrics in the Franciscan Complex near San Simeon, California: Evidence for sinistral slip on the Nacimiento fault zone?
    J. Singleton, Dept. of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia 22030, USA; and M. Cloos, Dept. of Geological Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78712 USA. Issue: April 2013. Originally posted online 19 Dec. 2012; http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/L259.1.

A controversial topic in California geology is the tectonic significance of the Nacimiento fault, a major structure that was active approximately 75 to 60 million years ago during subduction of oceanic crust beneath California. This fault juxtaposes granitic rocks similar to the Sierra Nevada batholith on the northeast side of the fault (the Salinian block) against rocks that formed within a subduction zone on the southwest side of the fault (the Franciscan Complex). Most previous studies have interpreted the Nacimiento fault either as (a) a left-lateral strike-slip fault along which the Salinian block granitic rocks moved 500-600 km northwestward with respect to the Franciscan Complex rocks; or (b) a thrust fault along which the Salinian block rocks were displaced more than 100 km southwestward over the Franciscan rocks. This study by John Singleton and Mark Cloos presents new structural data from Franciscan Complex rocks exposed along beach cliffs near San Simeon, California. These rocks have undergone left-lateral shearing parallel to the Nacimiento fault. Singleton and Cloos suggest this shearing was related to movement on the Nacimiento fault, supporting the tectonic interpretation of the Nacimiento fault as a major left-lateral structure.

Short-lived fast erosional exhumation of the internal Western Alps during the late Early Oligocene: constraints from geo-thermochronology of pro- and retro-side foreland basin sediments
    S. Jourdan et al., ISTerre, Grenoble, 38110, France. Issue: April 2013. Originally posted online 25 Feb. 2013; http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/L243.1.

The Oligocene is a key period in the evolution of the western Alps during which the mountain belt evolved from an accretionary wedge (Late Cretaceous to Eocene) to a relatively high-elevation mountain belt, similar to the central Alps today. Studying the sediments and sedimentary rocks deposited in basins adjacent to this mountain belt helps in reconstructing the orogenic evolution. During this period, relatively fast erosion is seen as a result of rapid surface uplift coupled with increasing orographic precipitation during this phase of orogenesis. Surface uplift may have been caused and sustained by different plate-tectonic processes such as a change in convergence direction, intermediate-depth slab breakoff, and emplacement of the Ivrea body during continental collision. The occurrence of contemporaneous volcanic activity on the pro-side of the western Alps on the subducting European plate between 36 and 30 million years ago is seen in connection with slab rollback of the Apennine slab and upwelling of hot mantle material beneath the western Alps.

Subduction along and within the Baltoscandian margin during the closing of the Iapetus Ocean and Baltica-Laurentia collision
    D. Gee et al., Uppsala University, Earth Sciences, Uppsala, 752 36, Sweden. Issue: April 2013. Originally posted online 19 Dec. 2012; http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/L220.1.

There are few places in the world where it is possible to trace a hot allochthon for 200 km across a continental margin, demonstrate its lateral displacement to have been more than twice this distance, infer that it was generated in an outer-margin subduction system during the final stages of ocean closure, and show that emplacement onto the platform occurred during subsequent continent collision. As a result of good exposure in the Scandian mountain belt and erosion to middle-crustal levels, the Caledonides in Scandinavia provide one of the best opportunities on the planet to study these aspects of mountain building.

    INVITED REVIEW ARTICLE
A review of observations and models of dynamic topography

It has been known since the early 1960s that moving tectonic plates shape the Earth's surface, forming mountain belts and rift valleys. In addition to this tectonic topography, the more subtle deformation of the Earth's surface due to mantle flow in the Earth's interior, called dynamic topography, has been an active research topic since the mid-1980s. Dynamic topography has received increased interest over the last few years because it challenged the well-established view that long-term sea level change can be deduced from the rock record of "stable" continental shelves. In this review article, Nicolas Flament and colleagues show that there is good agreement between long-wavelength (greater than 5,000 km) observations and models of dynamic topography. Their work confirms the significance of dynamic topography to long-term sea level change and reinforces that comparing the predictions of mantle flow models to the geological record constrains the physical properties of the mantle. Larger data sets and increasing computing power will enable progress in this field in the coming years.

    RESEARCH FOCUS ARTICLE
    Active tectonics and LiDAR revolution
    A. Meigs, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, 104 CEOAS Administration Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331, USA. Issue: April 2013; free access at http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/RF.L004.1.

A revolution in remote sensing, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) laser altimetry swath mapping, reveals the details of topographic features at such high resolution that they have transformed our understanding of tectonic forcing of the shape of the Earth's surface. Meter-scale DEMs (digital elevation models) capture fault offsets, fault zone structure, off-fault deformation, and landscape properties at microgeomorphic scale, highlighting that the surface faithfully records the complexity and sensitivity of deformation in detail.

    N. Flament et al., The University of Sydney, School of Geoscience, Madsen Building F09, Room 416, Eastern Avenue, The University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia. Issue: April 2013. Originally posted online 4 Feb. 2013; http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/L245.1.

    DSB2Go

Detect Safe Browsing to Go, known by the less wordy "DSB2Go," is a nifty USB device that offers users a locked-down personal Web browser to protect users' Web activity and accounts from malware designed to intercept login credentials and steal information. With DSB2Go, it doesn't matter if the computer has keyloggers or other types of malware installed, because all user activity and data are encrypted within the device's hardened browser. It is extremely easy to use, as the user just has to plug it in to the computer before logging into the site.

DSB2Go protects users from malware infections, phishing attempts, and pharming attacks. The device also foils man-in-the-middle and man-in-the-browser attacks. There is usually a trade off between security and convenience as the user gives up ease-of use to be secure, or being less secure in order to make it easy to use. DSB2Go balances the two successfully, as the only inconvenience is remembering to carry the USB device.

Many kinds of modern malware burrow deep into the user system in order to avoid being detected by antivirus and other security products. This means users may not even be aware their computers are infected with a banking Trojan or other data-stealing malware. When users access sensitive sites, such as online banking or business applications, from an infected computer, the malware intercepts login credentials and can take over the account. DSB2Go removes the uncertainty, since as long as the users are using the virtualized Web browser, all Web activity and data is encrypted and hidden from the malware. Even if the user is on a Zeus-infected computer, the malware can't penetrate the DSB2Go environment to access the data.

The device doesn't try to protect all Web activity but just those sites administrators identified beforehand in a whitelist on the management portal. Businesses can use DSB2Go as an extra layer of security to protect employees accessing certain business-critical applications, or roll out the service to customers accessing a specific online service. At $37.89 per device for an annual subscription, this can become a fairly expensive solution for large deployments, but Easy Solutions offers volume pricing and discounts.

Before making the plunge, businesses can also sign up for a 15-day free trial, during which they get three DSB2Go USB devices and the ability to whitelist up to three sites on the management portal.

    Getting Started
Easy Solutions sent a USB device and created an account on the company's Detect Monitoring Service portal for this review. The company's IT administrator logs into the portal and navigates to the "DSB2Go" tab to activate devices, create groups, define "protected applications," and view usage activity. When I logged in, I saw the USB drive I had was already activated.

If I had additional devices, I could activate it using the serial numbers. I could? set a password for each device and assign a "group." Groups allow administrators to assign basic policies to the device, such as the types of applications the user could access and authentication requirements.

    Groups, Devices, Sites
After creating a group, I can set the device's security level?entering the device password or a unique username/password combination before the hardened Web browser launches?or turn it off to use the device without any restrictions. Each device is then assigned to a group.

This way, I could ensure all the devices within a department had the same security level.

The interface was pretty sluggish, which may have been the fault of the test environment I was using. The pages took a while to load when switching tabs, and some windows didn't close right away.

The whitelist lives in the portal's "protected sites" section. I listed all the URLs to sites users are allowed to access using DSB2Go. This part can get tedious quickly for applications which redirects across several subdomains since administrators must specify each address separately. Gmail redirects users to accounts.google.com before displaying the inbox on mail.google.com, for example. For this review, I listed Gmail, Salesforce, TDBank, and Bank of America. I listed both onlinebanking.tdbank.com and www.tdbank.com?for TDBank. If the URL I am adding has SSL (uses HTTPS), then I have to upload the site's certificate.

I can do this manually (downloading the site certificate through the regular browser, or if it is an internal application, using the SSL certificate I have) or use the "scan for certificate" feature. This nifty trick checks the URL and grabs the valid SHA1 fingerprint. Saving the SSL certificate protects users from domain hijacking and other spoofing attacks where users are maliciously redirected to other sites.

I assigned at least one group to each URL. This way, I maintained a single whitelist for the entire organization but could specify a subset for each group. If the site's group didn't match the device's group, the user would not be able to go to that site.

While the list is easy to create, it can get long pretty quickly because of the individual sub-domains that need to be rested. There is no quick way to search or sort the URLs. I was able to filter the view to display URLs assigned to specific groups, but overall, the list is unweildy to work with after a certain length.

The end-user doesn't have any control over what sites the device allows. The entire user experience is managed by the administrator via the portal. This is a great way for adding basic access policies to certain business applications.

    Simple for Users
From the user perspective, it's dead simple: plug in the drive into the USB port and open up the special Web browser. The Web browser displays icons for each site the device is authorized to use. After about four or five sites, this screen appears really cluttered and there doesn't seem to be a way to sort the order the icons appear in.

Users click on the icon to go to the permitted site. If there is a problem with the SSL certificate, the user will be blocked.

Other than the fact that the user cannot type in a URL at all in the address bar, this special browser acts just like any other browser. Users can hit the back button to go back in the browsing session and open multiple tabs.

If while browsing through the approved application, an internal link goes to a different subdomain that wasn't already approved (such as customerservice.tdbank.com in the above banking example), the user is? automatically blocked. It would have been nice if the configuration service supported wildcards, so I could just say accept all *.tdbank.com sites without having to list each one individually. On the other hand, this means administrators have granular control, being able to specify which services are allowed: users are allowed to use Gmail and Calendar, but not Groups and Drive, for example.

The fact that the end-user doesn't have to download or install software was a big plus, although I wondered how many people would lose the USB drive or forget to keep it within reach.

I was disappointed the service is currently limited to only Windows users. Mac OS X and Linux users are currently not protected. When I plugged the device in to a Linux laptop, it didn't even detect anything in the USB port.

    Secure Browsing?Up To A Point
There are other virtual browser options for businesses, but many of them are out of the SMB's reach. DSB2Go addresses the fact that SMBs need this kind of browser technology, too.

Since all the settings are handled by the cloud service, DSB2Go is perfect for active business travelers who use different devices or access the Internet using open networks, or for customers who need to access a specific service or application. I am concerned about the fact that there is no way for administrator to verify that users are actually using DSB2Go. The user can easily skip the drive altogether and just use the regular Web browser.

Taking advantage of security provided by DSB2Go requires a significant behavior change, as the administrator has to convince the end-user that using this device is worth the extra effort. Other than that, though, DSB2Go is a nifty device that can really help businesses keep their customers and employees while accessing sensitive Web sites.

5 Eco-friendly kitchen improvements we can all afford

By Ryan Hirst | March 28, 2013 | DIY, How To's and Guides, Featured Stories, Kitchen Knowledge

A huge amount of emphasis is now on becoming more energy efficient and environmentally friendly within the home. We need to do all we can to ensure electricity bills and energy bills drop too. Having these added incentives give us a reason to improve our home.

Now the ?Green Deal? is in full flow in the United Kingdom we should be looking to improve our home in any way we can ? the kitchen is somewhere we should be doing this in. In today?s article I will give you 5 Eco-friendly kitchen improvements we can all afford, that will not only help to reduce our carbon footprint but also help decrease our bills too.

    Recycling and separating waste

This technique will not actually save you any money however it won?t cost you anything either. Instead of having to install anything or change the look of your home, or even have renovations. We can all do this one, no matter where we live in the UK we will be all very familiar with the colour coded recycling bins for different waste products. Spending a little bit of time to separate your waste and dispose of it correctly will contribute to your community hitting local recycling targets and reduce the amount of waste across the county.

By simply taking the time to separate things such as cardboard, paper, waste food and all sorts of other items will contribute nationally and locally to a better environment. One good tip for reusing your waste is to create your own compost heap with your food waste; this can take around 6 months before use but is a good idea if you?re a keen gardener.

    Making kitchen repairs

In the kitchen and any other part of the home, one of the main reasons for waste on energy bills is because repairs have not been made. Your homes energy bills and water bills can be higher than they need to be if you have problems such as leaks in the kitchen. This is one for the DIY lover, a good chance to save some money without spending either.

By simply getting the correct sized wrench you can adjust pipes to ensure you are not wasting any water. Another common problem can be windows not being sealed properly allowing heat to leave your home and also the cold to enter? Checking for any cracks and resealing can save money on heating bills.

You may also have waste pipes from your ovens or sinks, if so you need to ensure the holes are properly sealed for the same reasons.

    Installing energy saving light bulbs

This is something that hopefully most home owners are already doing. However if you are not I cannot understand why. Do you know how much better an energy efficient light bulb is then the standard one?

In fact an energy efficient light bulb lasts as long as ten years longer and along with this also uses between 70%-75% less energy in its lifetime. So in reality we are not having to change the bulb nearly as many times, which is saving us money but we?re also ensuring that we are becoming more energy efficient in the home and the kitchen. This is something I would definitely advise you doing in the kitchen because of the amount of time being spent in it. We need to save as much money on energy bills as we possibly can.

    Energy saving kitchen appliances

The kitchen is probably the most packed room in the home, filled with different appliances, using both electricity and also water. With this in mind we need to think about how we are using them. When it comes to actually replacing appliances or redesigning your kitchen look for ones with the highest possible energy efficiency rating. They are usually around the same price and will save you a lot of money in the long run, what more could you ask for?

There are many appliances you can buy that are energy efficient such as:

    -????????? Washing machines

    -????????? Dishwasher

    -????????? Tumble drier

    -????????? Ovens

    -????????? Taps etc.

The way we use these appliances contributes to your carbon footprint too. In fact by simply turning your washing machine down onto a 30?C instead of its usual will help save money, think about filling the dishwasher fully before use too.

    Is your home properly insulated?

The ?Green Deal? something I have wrote about on many different occasions. Something that I think is a great idea by the government, as I touched on before it is now up and running in the UK. The Green Deal allows us to make energy efficient home improvements, without having to pay it all off in one go.

Although ensuring your home is properly insulated is not just a kitchen improvement it is one that I feel I still have to mention. By properly insulating your home you could be saving as much as 10% on your energy bills annually. So why wouldn?t you want to do so? This is one of the many improvements we can have done to our home from the Green Deal and I urge you all to check it out now.

If you enjoyed this post, please take a moment to share it with your friends and colleagues using your favourite social network.
